[Newsletter] - Join another briefing about Covid-19 in Indonesia!

Dear reader,

Our weekly COVID-19 briefings are increasingly popular. More people are signing up every week and join the discussion about policy challenges in Indonesia. Things are moving at a fast pace and CIPS aims to provide up-to-date information and analysis. After previous conversations about food security, regional lockdowns and economic stimulus packages we have other important topics to discuss.

You are warmly invited to join us in our Weekly COVID Briefing (in English):

9 pm EDT, 11 May  - Washington DC

8 am, 12 May  - Jakarta

11 am, 12 May - Canberra We plan discussing the following challenges:

  • What is the impact of the crisis on marginalized or low-income communities? Poor women find themselves disproportionately affected. Persons with disabilities and homeless communities are facing unique challenges. Farmers struggle with labor shortages and reduced revenues. Indonesian workers abroad are heading back home and lose incomes that once supported rural families. The World Bank estimates that global remittances may fall by 20%, largely caused by the crisis.

  • With schools closed, education needs to go through rapid adjustments. This may be a blessing in disguise considering prevailing shortcomings of the system. Long distance learning is being implemented all across the country to tackle the situation. But then again, what about those who lack access and equipment? CIPS has written a policy brief and formulated policy recommendations on this.

Last Tuesday, a broad range of people attended our briefing, from Indonesian government representatives and foreign embassies, to academicians, business chambers, private sector actors, and many more. Do join us and add your thoughts to the discussion, which will be held in English. Please register here latest Monday, 11 May 2020.

Stay healthy and hope to have you with us next Tuesday!

Salam hangat, Rainer Heufers Executive Director Center for Indonesian Policy Studies
